Australia has become the pits of hell in world Corona stakes.
Australia’s reputation as a “lucky country” continued into COVID-19 but the reality is that fumbling and bumbling, delays and poor system design and delivery made the economic and social costs disproportionate to the low number of cases. The governance model was and remains a disaster.
There are G7 and Leaders’ Forums quite used to layers of Morrison PR bullying but underneath roiled tales of waste, cruelty and corrupt self-interest (Morrison & Frydenberg lied about this but OECD recently put the sword through them: “Business dynamism was on a decline going into the pandemic”). It was not a good time to have an erratic PM and tyro Treasurer.
This exercise started in August 2018 as “A study in Un-Politics, Non-Decision-Making & Elitist De-democratisation”, then “Cheated” in that December, after the current PM, Scott Morrison, took over from Malcolm Turnbull, under whom, when his Treasurer, a destructive mode of budgetting called “gifting” had developed. He rejected “barnacle” removal meaning “budget repair. My reports mapped the development of major dysfunctionalities including wasteful infrastructure sapping funds from health and education budgets.
They are still there in 2021.
A pantomime was produced by Australia in the southern summer of 2020 which led to the appointment of an Australian, Mathias Cormann, as sixth Secretary-General of OECD, under the sponsorship of known carbon prevaricators and albeit he had been the man in Australia who was highly instrumental in the rejection of OECD’s guidelines and replacement by corporate lobbies and cronies, as well as suppression of renewables. This ego game was destructive and needs exposure.
European and American leaders have joined domestic advocates in questioning the Australian PM’s and Ministers’ veracity and competence in a succession of world forums.
Well might they do so as democracy has been tainted by an unprecedented dominance of political and corporate vested interests, greed and cronyism, and incompetence by naïve politicians and their political appointees who having blundered are rewarded for serving their masters so well. The “Hard Carbon” champions are represented by political and geographic distinctions across a diverse land.
The Energy Minister tried to manipulate Paris Accord projections through the use of pre-credits (and failed), and overturns market principles to extend carbon usage past 2050, a perverse outcome for a supposed PhD in competition principles! Trust Angus Taylor? We’ll check his track record as an academic economist especially with failed “congestion bustin’” and his wrecking of Western Sydney’s productivity and employment.
Along the way vicious misogyny and narcissism outbursts disgusted observers of the treatment of bushfire communities and workers, raped women within Parliamentary premises or grown close to them over time, and individuals and their families who have been robbed of their life work with a consequence of avoidable deaths of 4,000 children in misery and slavery, so far. Berejiklian smiles when dealing with disasters but snarls and bites when her per projects and vilest promises are treated with objective professionalism.
It’s worse than that, when Treasurer Frydenberg was confronted with a 2019 Malenomics package and cancelled MYEFO, deferred the Budget, deferred Parliament, cancelled 2 weeks of Parliament, and deceived himself into more “gifting” tranches, he showed he is a coward.
“The Emperor has no clothes”. That they got further into trouble was no surprise but that they oppose repair of their blunders is catastrophic. Industry groups are Big Business and disregard SMEs. Local government has great potential but is excluded. Media are too frequently insipid and subservient, producing churnalism more than journalism. The predominant structures in the capital cities are the forests of silos where groupthink is progressively rotting, from their tops.
The OECD guidelines have been applied diligently in my works because they are founded on right and proper precedents. This analyst is last of a great generation of NSW reformers who followed that path through the guidance of excellent educations and commonsense as well as comradeship.
